Following decades of dedicated service to the community, the Far Hills Firehouse remains a cherished part of Borough heritage. However, despite its proud legacy, the Union Hook & Ladder No. 1’s status has more recently been relegated to that of a storage facility.
Downtown Far Hills’ most iconic building, the classically designed concrete, brick, and steel firehouse was introduced in 1921 to replace the fire department’s original circa 1901 wooden structure. It is no coincidence that its opening celebration occurred the very same year Far Hills became an independent borough. In decades to come, the firehouse continued to provide the setting for many more celebrations, civic meetings, and other social gatherings.
Now celebrating its 103rd year, Far Hills Firehouse is set to serve its community once again. Through historically sensitive adaptive reuse and renovation, Melillo Equities is excited to restore its’ legacy as village focal point and favorite community gathering spot.
While ensuring that original architectural features such as its distinctive belltower and arched door and window casements are preserved, new design elements will be introduced, bringing a refreshed purpose and aesthetic to the property. Anticipating its proposed transformation into an ice cream parlor, bakery, and café, the current redevelopment design will not only revitalize the firehouse, but its streetscape presence as well. Planned outdoor improvements include street-facing patio and rooftop terrace, designed to establish a lively connection between building and public realm. The addition of native shade trees and lush greenery will further strengthen the site’s casual, friendly ambiance.
By initiating these enhancements, we aim to elevate the Far Hills pedestrian experience, creating a welcoming atmosphere that also benefits neighboring businesses. Through meticulous planning and thoughtful design, we are dedicated to transforming the Far Hills Firehouse and its surroundings into a destination enjoyed by residents and visitors alike for many years to come.
